BOREDOM
A big concern about dressing with 33 items or less is boredom. We are afraid that we won’t have enough, and that we’ll get bored as a result. This is a valid concern if your clothes are the most interesting thing about your life. When I had a closet stuffed with clothes, I was often bored with my wardrobe. I’d flip through my clothes and think, I have nothing to wear. I kept buying things to make my wardrobe less boring, and after a successful shopping trip, I’d think I had fixed things. But as soon as the purchase high wore off and I was left a little broker, I’d end up just as bored as I was the last time I needed to get something new. I was looking for that next piece, as if it would fix not just my next look but other things in my life, too. You know, the perfect scarf/belt/jacket to tie the whole look together, to tie everything up in a pretty bow, to complete me. As if the right outfit would make me more interested, or interesting, or complete my life. I was optimistic that something new would settle down any angst or discontent I carried. Of course that never worked.
Despite what you’ve been conditioned to believe, clothes will not make you a better person. It was a rare moment that I went shopping because I was actually in need. Instead, I purchased clothing to feel better, to be stylish, to look thinner, to feel powerful, to measure up, or to quiet boredom. I wore things to fit in, blend in, and look and try to feel like I belonged in meetings or events (that I never really wanted to be at in the first place). I bought clothing for those reasons and others, always thinking a new pair of shoes or a slimming jacket would help me perform better, look better, feel better, or be better. My purchases did none of those things. Instead, they delivered buyer’s remorse, debt, and clutter . . . and then more shopping to feel better. I tried this with things besides clothing, too, but my closet got most of my shopping attention. It took dressing with less to allow me to see my behavior for what it was. Dressing with 33 items or less for years has taught me that there is nothing that will make me better but me.
